When winter arrives and the snow begins to fall why not head to the mountains for some fun in the snow. Mt Baw Baw is the closest downhill ski resort to Melbourne (approx 2 hours drive). Visitors can now travel via the Princes Highway turning off at Moe and following signs to Mt Baw Baw via the South Face Road. Alternatively turn off before Drouin and travel through Neerim South and Noojee or drive along the Warburton Highway and turn off at Yarra Junction continuing through Powelltown, which joins the main road at Noojee.
At Mt Baw Baw you don’t have to ski or snowboard to enjoy the snow. So why not give it a go, all the family can participate in days of fun, snow filled activities.

Just over two hours east of Melbourne you’ll discover Mt St Gwinear, a wonderful mountain for families to enjoy where you can ride a toboggan, throw a snow ball or build a snow man.
Experience the alpine environment and admire the beauty of the Baw Baw plateau either by cross country skiing or snow shoes. Mt St Gwinear offers peace and tranquillity that is not found on other mountains.
Mt St Gwinear offers:
- 20 kilometres of cross country ski and snow shoe trails (no fees required)
- Two graded toboggan runs
- Walking track to viewing platform (snow shoes are not required)
- Heated day shelter including change room, toilets (limited mobility access) and picnic tables at the car park
- Parks Victoria facilities - Ranger Office and First Aid Room
- Parks Victoria Office at the car park providing toboggan hire
- St Gwinear Ski Patrol operates on weekends
- All facilities are open daily during the July and September Victorian school holidays
- All public facilities including access roads are open and accessible 24 hours a day throughout the declared winter period (June 11th to September 30th)
Snow on all access roads to St Gwinear is cleared as required throughout the declared winter season. It is compulsory for all vehicles travelling to Mt St Gwinear during winter to carry wheel chains and fit them where directed on both Thomson Valley and St Gwinear Roads.
If you are heading to Mt St Gwinear, make sure you fuel up before you go. The nearest towns that offer petrol are Moe, Tyers and Traralgon. There is no petrol available in Erica, Rawson or Walhalla.
Also make sure you take plenty of snacks and food on your trip. The nearest town where you can buy take away food is Erica.
